SIOS Product Descriptions

LifeKeeper for Linux

The LifeKeeper product includes fault detection and recovery software that provides high availability for file systems, network addresses, applications and processes running on Linux. LifeKeeper supports the configuration and switchover of a given application across multiple servers. The servers on which the application is configured are assigned priorities to determine the sequence in which the application will move from server to server in the event of multiple failures.

LifeKeeper for Linux provides switchover protection for a range of system resources. Automatic recovery is supported for the following resource types:

  • Processes and Applications
  • Shared Storage Devices (Including VMWare virtual hard disks)
  • Communication Resources (TCP/IP)

DataKeeper for Linux

The SIOS DataKeeper product:

  • Provides volume-based synchronous and asynchronous data replication.
  • Integrates into the LifeKeeper Graphical User Interface for administration and monitoring.
  • Automatically resynchronizes data between source and target servers at system recovery.
  • Monitors the health of underlying system components and performs local recovery in the event of failure.
  • Allows manual resource switchovers and failovers of mirrored volumes.
  • Can be easily upgraded to provide high availability clustering and automatic failover and recovery using a license key to enable new functionality.

New Features of Supported Versions of LifeKeeper for Linux Version 9

Bug Fixes

The following is a list of the latest bug fixes and enhancements.

Bug
Description
PL-4739 Fixed a bug that could cause /etc/default/LifeKeeper to be 0 bytes after forced shutdown.
PL-7770 The lklicmgr utility now shows the correct description for an SAP HANA Recovery Kit license.
PL- 9226 Fixed an issue where /dev/vgname/lvname could not be specified as a device in DataKeeper resource operations using LKCLI.
PL-9280 The SAP Recovery Kit will now log an error message if it detects that a protected ERSv1 instance is running on multiple cluster nodes.
PL-12315 The LifeKeeper startup will now start after the AWS cloud-init process completes.
PL-12620 When using storage quorum functionality in ‘aws_s3’ mode, qwk_storage_init now verifies that s3:GetObject permissions are granted.
PL-12621 When using storage quorum functionality in ‘aws_s3’ mode, an error message is now logged when the S3 object becomes inaccessible.
PL-12623 When using storage quorum functionality, an error message is now logged when the QWK object of the remote node has size 0 bytes.
PL-12624 In a situation where errors are continuously occurring while reading/writing a QWK object, repeated error messages of the same type are suppressed from being output to the log file. This prevents the log file from being filled with the target error message and makes it easier to identify the problem.
PL-12625 A message is now logged when the acquisition status of a QWK object changes.
PL-12934 The SAP and SAP HANA Recovery Kits will now detect the appropriate NFS version and protocol for a required shared file system without requiring the user to manually add entries to the /etc/default/LifeKeeper file.
PL-12940 When the QWK object storage type is “block”, log an error if the device node does not exist.
PL-13141 Storage quorum (qwk_storage_init) error messages are now easier to understand.
PL-13245 Emergency log messages from LifeKeeper may now be temporarily disabled by setting appropriate LifeKeeper flags.
PL-13248 When an IP address has been manually associated to a network interface using the wrong network mask, the IP Recovery Kit will now log an error when bringing the resource in-service and successfully remove the IP address when bringing the resource out of service.
PL-13260 Fixed a memory leak related to the lkvmhad process. This is a VMware only issue.
PL-13355 Users are now notified via email and/or SNMP when a DataKeeper mirror resynchronization completes.
PL-13460 The LifeKeeper GUI now correctly shows the process names in the resource properties panel for an SAP Recovery Kit resource protecting an ERSv1 instance.
PL-13589 Fixed an issue where an SAP resource may fail to come in-service after a machine failover if there is a running process on the new host server whose PID conflicts with PIDs stored in the sapstart.log file.
PL-13748 Oracle Linux 8.5 RHCK users can now use DataKeeper without additional steps.
PL-13953 Fixed bug in LB Health Check Kit where Gen LB restore failed if Gen LB daemon is already running.
PL-14238 Fixed bug in LB Health Check Kit where Gen LB’s check_exist_process could fail to reboot in some cases.
PL-14247 Fixed bug in LB Health Check Kit where lkstop -f also stopped the Gen LB daemon.
PL-14388 Disable LVM auto_activation_volume_list in lvm.conf to allow the SCSI check daemon to open/close the device without causing a failure.
PL-14401 The NetworkManager-initscripts-updown package is installed with LifeKeeper on RHEL8.6 or later.
PL-14795 QSP can now protect Samba and Postfix services.

The LifeKeeper Quorum/Witness Package allows a node to get a “second opinion” on the status of a failing node acting as an intermediary to determine which servers are part of the cluster. When determining when to fail over, the Witness Server, or Storage Witness, allows resources to be brought in service on a backup server only in cases where it verifies the primary server has failed and is no longer part of the cluster.

Note: Quorum is required for all 2 node DataKeeper clusters. Each 2 node cluster must use its own quorum/witness node. Shared witness servers are not recommended.

LifeKeeper SCSI3 Recovery Kit steeleye-lkSCSI3-9.6.2-7477.noarch.rpm The LifeKeeper SCSI3 Recovery Kit protects applications and file systems that use the standard Linux SCSI device interface (/dev/sd device nodes) with SCSI-3 persistent reservations.
LifeKeeper LB Health Check Kit steeleye-lkLBHC-9.6.2-7477.noarch.rpm The LifeKeeper LB (Load Balancer) Health Check Kit replaces the Generic Load Balancer (GenLB) Recovery Kit. The GenLB recovery kit was a collection of action scripts available for download for 9.6.1 to be used with a generic application (gen/app) resource. The GenLB kit has been migrated to a full ARK for ease of use.

Installation and Configuration

See the LifeKeeper for Linux Installation Guide for complete installation and configuration information.

Upgrades

LifeKeeper can be upgraded to Version 9.6.2 from either LifeKeeper Version 9.4.x, Version 9.5.x or Version 9.6.x. If upgrading from a version other than 9.4.x or 9.5.x, the older version will need to be uninstalled and SIOS Protection Suite for Linux will have to be reinstalled. An alternative to uninstalling the older version would be to upgrade from the older version to 9.4.x or 9.5.x, then perform the upgrade to 9.6.x.

Storage and Adapter Options

For a list of the disk array storage models and adapters currently supported by LifeKeeper in shared storage configurations as well as their type of certification, see the Storage and Adapter Options topic. Details about driver versions and other configuration requirements for these arrays and adapters are listed in the Storage and Adapter Configuration topic.

Technical Notes

We strongly recommend that you read the Technical Notes section concerning configuration and operational issues related to your LifeKeeper environment.

Known Issues

See Known Issues and Restrictions in the Troubleshooting section of LifeKeeper for Linux Technical Documentation and the DataKeeper Troubleshooting section.
